Why human connection is at the core of my work

Human connection is a focus woven into everything I do with Colorful Matter. Whether (1) directly, through Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and culture-building projects, (2) as an underlying theme in for example event projects, or (3) indirectly through communications or any other type of project.

Why? Human connection is the biggest happiness catalyst. By embedding this genuine connection into projects we enhance individual, team and community happiness. And with that, we amplify each project’s impact and success.

How happiness impacts success
Now you might wonder how happiness impacts a project. Here’s how: At the heart of any results and growth are engaged, committed people who feel connected, seen, and valued. Happier individuals bring more kindness, creativity, and problem-solving skills to the table. They’re better at using resources wisely and negotiating towards win-win solutions. When people are happier, they’re more resilient, engaged, and collaborative and feel more inspired to overcome challenges together.

True connection isn’t simply a nice addition, it’s a driver for organizational growth and lasting relationships. The best part? Creating these connection opportunities for others is one of the easiest, most fulfilling, fast-track ways to enhance your positioning and thought leadership.

By prioritizing human connection, you establish yourself as a trusted partner and a vocal point in your community, amplifying your general project results. People will associate these positive, relationship-building experiences with your brand, as a facilitator and connector, laying a foundation for long-term success and loyalty.

What makes people happy?
Happiness stems from the simple yet profound elements: Kindness, social connection, mindfulness, time affluence (having enough time to enjoy life) and healthy habits.

While some of these are personal, the first four are core principles I naturally weave into all my work, whether my own initiatives or client projects. When we make these principles part of our projects, workplaces, and communities, they deliver immediate, tangible results.

Why it works
Whether within your organization or within your community of partners, human connection strengthens engagement and propels projects forward in meaningful ways, creating stronger partnerships and better outcomes.

Research supports the profound impact of human connection:

  • Acts of kindness instantly make people happier, both the giver and the receiver. Even just thinking about doing something kind can improve happiness (Otake et al., 2006).

  • Personal contact makes us happier than we expect. Even talking to strangers. While we think we might feel awkward about starting a conversation with someone new, research shows that even connecting with strangers boosts happiness—for both of you (Epley & Schroeder, 2014).

  • Shared experiences make us feel happier. Knowing that someone else is going through the same thing, even if you're not physically together, increases enjoyment (Boothby et al., 2014).

  • Expressing gratitude amplifies happiness: Writing down what you’re thankful for increases happiness and reduces negativity. Going a step further—expressing your gratitude to someone—creates an even bigger, long-lasting boost in happiness. That happiness sticks around for even months after the event (Seligman).

  • And, most importantly in this case, personal connections improve business success: When people connect on a personal level, trust and empathy grow, leading to better collaboration and long-term success (Thye, Yoon, & Lawler, 2002).

That’s why this commitment to connection is the common thread through everything I do at Colorful Matter, always aiming for happy impact on others. It’s a powerful approach that can transform your projects to achieve meaningful, lasting results.
